Why did they crash? Family of dead passenger speak out

The wife and daughter of filmmaker John Davis, who was killed in a helicopter crash have revealed his final hours in an emotional interview.

Felicity Davis is coming to terms with the tragic loss of her husband of 45 years and says the crash that also claimed the lives of Richard and Carolyn Green was "fast".

John Davis was a friend of the Greens, a fellow explorer, conservationist and the ultimate outdoorsman.

The Greens, who featured in a Sunday Night story in 2014, had been exploring Australia in their helicopter for decades together and invited John to an anti-coal mine rally in northern NSW.

It was the last time Felicity saw her husband.

"[He was] doing exactly what he wanted to do," she said, in the interview to air November 15.

It is not yet known what caused the chopper to go down in the NSW bushland near Cessnock on Saturday November 7 but John's daughter Sophie got the call that their bodies had been found.

"Our immediate thoughts were just horror. He went down," Sophie said.

"So quickly, it just must have happened so fast" Felicity told Sunday Night.

John was also close friends with entrepreneur and fellow adventurer Dick Smith who says the accident marked "a terrible time for conservation in Australia"

"John Davis was a very close friend of mine since I was 19 years of age."

After news emerged that Richard Green had a record of dangerous flying, Smith told Sunday Night he was shocked.
