Weekend relief after heatwave hell

Relief is on the way for Australians after days of a punishing heatwave hell.

The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled its heatwave warning for NSW, with conditions easing in the wake of a cold front.

“No further warnings will be issued for this event but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings issued if necessary,” the bureau stated.

In a five-day stretch beginning on September 16, temperatures soared across metropolitan Sydney and parts of regional NSW and authorities warned of dangerous health and bushfire risks.

Sweltering temperatures jumped 10C higher than usual spring weather.

But Sydneysiders can now look forward to a gentler weekend of moderate temperature, with the bureau predicting a max temperature of 20C for Saturday and 21C for Sunday.

Moderate temperatures are on the way for much of the country as well.

In Perth, temperatures will hit 21C on Saturday and 23C on Sunday.

In Brisbane, both days are forecast to hover around 23C.

Darwin, however, will continue its run of hot weather, with a max temperature of 35C predicted for Saturday and 34C for Sunday.

But even though the heatwave is over, the bureau has urged Australians to remain cautious.

“Hot weather can still occur even when a heatwave has ended,” the bureau states.

“It may take some days to recover from a heatwave.

“You should continue to take care of yourself and others, including animals.”
