An ex-tropical cyclone sitting in waters off Western Australia’s coast could develop into a category one overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology is warning the ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln will track southward along the coast before making landfall in areas south of Carnarvon on Sunday morning.

Senior meteorologist Christie Johnson said the it was likely to strengthen overnight.

“Ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln is slowly restrengthening over waters off the WA coast and may become a category one tropical cyclone overnight,” Ms Johnson said.

“Currently ex-Tropical Cyclone Lincoln is located about 370km north of Exmouth and is currently moving approximately parallel to the WA coast.

“However, over the course of tonight and tomorrow morning, that system is expected to move southward and strengthen into a category one cyclone.”

The Bureau has warned of sustained winds of about 55km/h and wind gusts of about 85 km/h.

But stronger wind gusts of up to 90 to 120 km/h are possible as it strengthens.

As it makes landfall near Carnarvon on Sunday, a heavy rainfall system is expected, with rainfall totals of between 50 and 100mm anticipated.

However, the region could receive some isolated falls of up to 150mm.

Residents across the impacted regions are encouraged to monitor Emergency WA and the Bureau of Meteorology websites for potential flood warnings.

It comes as Emergency WA has issued multiple cyclone warnings for coastal communities across the state.

A yellow alert has been put in place for people in or near coastal communities and offshore islands between North West Cape, Coral Bay and Giralia, including Exmouth.

“There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a cyclone is approaching the area,” an emergency warning said.

“You need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone.”

A blue alert has been issued for people in or near coastal communities and offshore islands south of Onslow to Overlander Roadhouse, including Lyndon.

“Although there is no immediate danger you need to start preparing for cyclonic weather, commence implementing your cyclone plan and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, food and water,” the alert read.

Emergency WA said the cyclone risk is now passing coastal communities between Mardie and Onslow.
