Waitress stunned by unbelievable tip left by billionaire

A waitress has been left with an “unbelievable” tip which had left her “shaking”.

Jennifer Navaria, a waitress at a restaurant in Salisbury Beach in the US state of Massachusetts, served a party of four recently before leaving them with a bill for about A$233, Fox 23 reports.

As is customary in the US, she was left a tip for her services. She originally thought the tip was for US$50 (A$74) but actually misread the receipt.

It was until she saw the jaw-dropping total she realised she’d been left with a tip for more than US$5,000 (A$7,400).

"I was shaking. And it was, like, really unbelievable," Ms Navaria told Fox23.

"It’s huge. You see this happening, but you would never think of it happening to you."

The real reason behind customer’s generous tip

It was later revealed the person behind the tip is car dealership owner and philanthropist Ernie Boch.

Ms Navaria thanked him on Facebook for his “amazing generosity”.

Mr Boch told WFXT waiters and waitresses are “fine people”.

But the real reason behind his generous tip was the “2020 Tip Challenge” which is circulating on social media.

It’s meant to inspire people to tip more.

Mr Boch signed off his tip with “Donnie, your move” – a call out to Donnie Wahlberg, the brother of actor Mark Wahlberg.

It appears Donnie Wahlberg heard him too. His wife Jenna McCarthy shared a photo of a tip he recently left at an International House of Pancakes restaurant.

He left a tip for US$2020 (A$2990).
