Fisherman spends three hours reeling 4m tiger shark into shore

A fisherman has spent three hours reeling in a 4.1 metre tiger shark from the beach at the northern WA town of Port Samson.

Kruz Mettner had been out shark fishing with his mates in Dampier when they decided to try their luck elsewhere.

The 19-year-old said he kayaked roughly 300 metres out to drop “a big cod head” as bait.

He never imagined the exhausting battle that would follow.

“I fought her for about three hours before I got her in to the beach," he said.

"When we first saw her tail, we thought we’d got something quite different and because most of the tigers have headed south this time
of year," he told The West Australian.

“It was me fighting with her all that time and the other two filming. The only time it was a team effort was the last bit when he pulled her onto the beach."

The young trade assistant emphasised that they always release whatever they catch, adding that he doesn’t actually enjoy eating seafood.

“Before we let her go, we measured her at 4.1m. She was a big girl. The end of my rod ended up snapping off,” he added.

The Wickham resident said he doesn’t drink or smoke, meaning there’s not much else to do beside fishing.

Following his massive catch, the teen added that he’d cherish an opportunity to take on a formal role in finding out more about sharks.

“I’d love to talk to the Department of Fisheries about getting involved in some shark tagging up here,” he said.
