A Virgin Atlantic flight had to make an emergency landing in Manchester after crew smelled something burning.

Virgin Atlantic Flight VS75 left Manchester for Florida at around 11:30, but had to complete an emergency landing at around 1pm due to a “small technical fault.”

Officials told media the jumbo jet had a small problem with an aircraft fan.

The Boeing 747-400 dumped fuel over the sea while flying at 19,000 feet and fire engines were put on standby on the runway.

The problem was reportedly fixed on the tarmac once the plane landed back in Manchester. Passengers remained on board and the flight was back in the air and on its way to the US shortly after 4pm, Daily Mail reported.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic said: “due to a technical issue, our flight VS75 from Manchester to Orlando on 02 May, returned to Manchester as a precautionary measure.”

“We would like to thank customers for their co-operation and patience,” she added.
