Memphis Residents Rally for Charlottesville Victims at KKK Leader's Statue
Members of the Memphis community gathered at Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest statue on Saturday in solidarity with the victims of the Charlottesville white nationalist rally attack, on August 12.
One person was killed and 10 injured when a 20-year-old man drove a car into a group of counter-protesters at a pro-white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, VA.
The protest had attracted thousands of white supremacists and alt-right sympathisers. It was reported that the counter-protest was organized by Antifa.
The Memphis Grassroots Organizations Coalition called on community members to spread the #hatecantstand message.
The Nathan Bedford Forrest statue is a contentious landmark in Memphis; in 2013 the Memphis City Council applied to move the statue from the Health Sciences Park, in the wake of the Charleston, SC, church shooting.
