'You better run': Video shows officer hit in head with fire extinguisher

New vision has emerged showing a police officer being struck in the head by a fire extinguisher thrown by a member of the riotous Trump mob during a siege on the Capitol building last week.

The footage was taken shortly after the mob breached containment lines in front of the building and overwhelmed the law enforcement presence, with a number of fights breaking out as some rioters individually attacked police as the crowd surged forward.

“It’s over, you better run cops!” one man can be heard screaming in video.

“You better f***ing run,” echoes another.

Seconds later, amid the chaos, a man can be seen hurling a fire extinguisher towards a group of police officers appearing to apprehend someone in the crowd slightly below.

The item was thrown about five metres before appearing to strike a helmeted police officer in the head.

Chants of “USA” can be heard at the same time.

Moments later, a person behind the camera nonchalantly remarks: “There’s a guy like dying over there, they’re trying to hold him up.”

It is is unclear if the officer who was struck by the fire extinguisher was Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, 42, who died after reportedly being hit in the head with a fire extinguisher during the riot, two law enforcement sources told the Associated Press.

The investigation into his death is ongoing.

President Donald Trump has now declared a state of emergency in Washington DC ahead of President-Elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

Sickening clip of ‘intense’ violence shocks

It’s far from the only video to be widely circulated on social media in recent days, showing Trump-supporters attacking police with sticks, pipes, pepper spray and other implements.

Another disturbing video shows a bloodied police officer screaming for help as he’s crushed by protesters inside the Capitol building. The young officer is pinned between a riot shield and metal door, and can be seen bleeding from the mouth as he cries out in pain and screams: “Help!”

Other images show police completely overwhelmed by protesters who shoved, kicked and punched their way into the Capitol building.

One scene circulating on social media shows rioters bashing an officer while he lies face-down and motionless near an entrance to the building.

At least one man is repeatedly bashing him with an American flag.

A chilling account of the exact scene was published by The New York Times on Monday (local time), revealing the monstrosity of those involved.

“Of all the scenes of violence, one of the most intense occurred during a struggle to breach a west-side door, during which multiple rioters dragged police officers out of a formation and assaulted them while they were trapped in the crowd,” the Times reported.

The officer filmed lying motionless on the ground as he was beaten was not Brian Sicknick, rather a member of the Metropolitan Police Department, according to the report.

Analysis of arrest reports, court documents and social media posts shows the crowd of Trump supporters was littered with white supremacists, QAnon followers, convicted criminals and even Republican officials.

As the most ardent among them have reorganised online to call for more acts of violent insurrection, the FBI has warned about further unrest ahead of Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20.

The Democrats, meanwhile, have brought a motion to impeach the president for inciting the mob towards insurrection.

While a vote on impeachment could happen mid-week, it’s unlikely the process will oust Donald Trump from office before the end of his term.
