Victoria’s Covid crisis explodes: Huge new spike in cases
Victoria's Covid crisis spiralled to daunting new heights on Thursday, with the state reporting a huge spike in Covid-19 cases.
The state recorded 1,438 locally acquired cases of Covid, an increase of almost 500 cases reported on Wednesday.
It's the biggest jump in cases reported by any state in Australia since the pandemic began.
Thursday's numbers eclipse the previous high of 950 set 24 hours earlier.
Sadly, the Department of Health announced a further five Covid-related deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 41.
Reported yesterday: 1,438 new local cases and 0 cases acquired overseas.

There were 34,323 vaccinations administered and 65, 497 test results were received.
