The victim of a fatal altercation that occurred last week in the southeast Forest Lawn neighbourhood of Calgary has been identified by Calgary police.

Dean Visser, 16, of Calgary, died in hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries, an autopsy completed on Sunday by the office of the chief medical examiner confirmed.

"This tragic incident didn't need to happen. My condolences go out to the victim's family," Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson said in a press release.

"The impact of an incident like this has a ripple effect through the community. I sympathize with family and friends who have been shaken by this tragic loss."

Officers were called to the 1300 block of 41 Street S.E. at about 7 p.m. on Thursday after reports of a fight with a weapon.

At the scene police found Visser suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with his first-degree murder, police said in a release on Saturday.
