Driver 'resting arm out window of ute' almost loses limb in horror crash

A young driver believed to be travelling with his arm hanging out of his ute window has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after a horrific accident in Melbourne's west.

Firefighters told 7 News the driver, aged in his 20s, was travelling down Dynon Road with his arm hanging out the the window of his ute when he crashed into a taxi around 6.30am Friday.

The man's ute rolled onto its side, leaving the driver with “serious arm injuries”, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson told Yahoo7 News.

A taxi driver, who had two passengers in his car at the time, then stopped and ran over to the ute before taking off his own belt and using it to make a tourniquet for the young driver.

The driver was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition with serious arm injuries.

The crash, which took place in heavy Melbourne fog, caused lengthy delays at peak hour after emergency services closed down the road for some time.

Both cars were eventually removed from the scene, clearing a backlog of traffic.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the weather conditions played a role in the accident.
