'I wanted her to look me in the eyes': Family of girl killed by drunk driver stare accused down in court
Nursing student Natasha Pigot was only 19 years old when she was killed by a driver three times over the legal limit.
On Thursday Natasha's family stared down her killer, Subha Anand, as she hid her face and cried in the dock.
Outside court, Natasha's mother Alecha McMaster clutched a photo of her daughter.
"I wanted her to look at me," she said. "I wanted her to look me in the eyes and see what she's caused."
Natasha was stopped at a set of traffic lights in Williams Landing, in Melbourne's southwest, when Anand slammed into the back of her car at more than 115 km/h.
The 29-year-old, who has an eight-month-old baby, had left a party in anger after fighting with her boyfriend.
Despite his pleas for her not to drive, she raced off while she was three times over the limit.
Anand will find out on Friday how long she'll spend behind bars, but she won't be the only one punished: she's applied to take her young baby to prison with her.
"It would have been nice of her to apologise to the family," Natasha's uncle Paul Potaoej said.
"Right through this court case, there hasn't been one apology."
While the nursing student lay dying at the scene, Subha Anand told police someone else was behind the wheel.
In court, she pleaded guilty to one count of culpable driving as Natasha's mother and sister stared her down.
As they read out their victim impact statements, Anand covered her face with a scarf before she was taken into custody.
"It's been a long journey and I'm so glad it's almost finished," Natasha's mother said.
"We just want it all over."
