Chaotic scenes as woman charged over hit-and-run tries to leave court without getting photographed

Police say a woman charged over a Melbourne hit-run that left a teenage girl fighting for life, had "no choice" but to hand herself in.

Thi Nguyen, 41, of Sunshine North, handed herself in to police on Thursday morning after walking into her lawyer's office at about 11am.

The woman faces multiple charges including dangerous driving after an alleged hit-and-run which left a 13-year-old girl in hospital suffering critical injuries.

After leaving police headquarters there were chaotic scenes as Ms Nguyen tried to avoid waiting photographers.

Placing a jacket over her head and unable to see, Ms Nguyen ran around in circles for several minutes before a police officer guided her to a waiting car.

"She had no choice. She knew that we were going to name her," Victoria Police Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor told reporters on Thursday.

“She knew we were going to put her face out there, and she knew that eventually we were going to come knocking."

The woman was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, failing to stop after a serious injury collision, failing to render assistance after a serious injury collision and failing to exchange name and address or report a collision.

Police allege a BMW struck the teenage girl on her bike and then drove off from the Coburg crash scene on Sunday.

The teenage girl is still in an induced coma, fighting for her life in the Royal Children's Hospital.

Seven News understands there have been some small signs of improvement, but police say she still has a long road to recovery.
