Shoppers jump for their lives as runaway car smashes into Melbourne cafe

Pedestrians had to jump for their lives as a runaway car smashed into a Melbourne cafe, injuring six people including the driver.

The incident happened at 12.30pm on Monday when a Honda Civic mounted the footpath and crashed into the Gardenia Cafe near the corner of Centre and Clayton roads in Clayton.

It's believed the driver, a 74-year-old Clayton South man, may have mistaken the accelerator for his brake pedal.

CCTV footage shows a near miss as a nearby kebab shop staff member leaps out of the car's path as tables and chairs are destroyed.

Ambulance Victoria arrived at the scene and treated the victims, including a teenage girl, a woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s.

The injured were taken to Monash Medical centre but none are in a critical condition.

The cafe has suffered serious structural damage in the accident.

The driver was the sole occupant of the car and was subsequently treated for chest pains.

Police are continuing to investigate exactly what happened.
