Melbourne monster cat in the running for world's longest feline
A massive Melbourne kitty is in the running to be the world's longest cat, measuring a staggering 120cm long and weighing 14kgs.
The Croydon moggie is on the verge of international fame but Omar is a reluctant star, cowering from the cameras as 7 News tried to capture his prize-winning physique.
You don’t make it to 14kgs climbing trees and jumping fences - Omar is more of a catnapper.
“I think after everyone’s had their share of him he'll be happy to go back to being a house cat,” his owner Stephanie Hirst said.
It might be some time before the Croydon cat returns to normal life. He's already a social media star, thanks to a repost by the Cats of Instagram page.
The bright lights of international stardom then came knocking with a call from the Guinness World Records team.
Now Omar's in the running for his very own title of the world's longest cat.
“We were expecting about a nine kilo cat, and he got to that before he was one year old,” Ms Hirst said.
“That’s when we realised he’s not nearly done yet and we've got a really big cat on our hands.”
Initial measurements have clocked the kitty at a staggering 120cms long, but current record holder Ludo, from the UK, is 118 cms long. So it's now the battle of the feline heavyweights.
Omar is intent on keeping a low key life, even as his star continues to rise, Ms Hirst said.
“He won’t be becoming a diva any time soon.”
