'Not a fashion accessory': Five-year-old Sikh boy rejected from Melbourne school

A young Melbourne family has taken an elite Christian school to court after their five-year-old son was turned away because of his turban.

Sidhak Singh Arora was planning on attending Melton Christian College in Melbourne’s north-west until his parents were told his patka, was going to be an issue.

“I really feel bad and disappointed, because I thought this is a modern society, how can a kid not go to the school of his choice, just because he is wearing religious clothing?,” he told SBS News.

“My son really wanted to go to that school… This is one of the best schools over there, I say the best school in the Melton area.”

His understandably disappointed father said the solution was not as simple as just taking his turban off.

“You have to keep your hair covered all the time… It's not like a fashion, or accessory for us, it's like a basic principle of our religion,” Mr Singh Arora added.

The case has now been taken to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal where a hearing date has been scheduled for April.
