Melbourne father who nearly lost his hand in home invasion attack likely 'wrong person'

A Melbourne father of two whose hand was nearly cut off during a brutal home invasion two years ago has revealed the terrible scars he sustained from the attacker still on the run.

In March 2014 Dan Maynard woke to find a man covering his mouth and stabbing him with a large knife, believing the attacker wanted to kill him.

He suffered serious injuries to his arms and head including a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

"My left hand was basically amputated… I have no opposability in my left thumb so my left hand basically doesn't work," he told 7 News.

Police are treating the attack in isolation and it doesn't fit into a pattern with any other home invasions.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector Stephen Clark said he could not imagine much worse than the "brutal attack" Mr Maynard endured.

"It's a really brutal unprovoked attack," Det Insp Clark said.

"I can't think of anything much worse than being woken in your bed at three-thirty in the morning and someone trying to choke you and then viciously slashing you."

His attacker is believed to be Caucasian, around 180 centimetres tall with a medium to solid build and dark hair.

There is a suspicion it may have more to do with a previous resident of the property, Mr Maynard and his family having moved to the home only three months earlier.

"The only solace that I find in this is the knowledge that I believe that I was the wrong person in the wrong spot at the wrong time," Mr Maynard said.
