Donations for Alfie

The owners of a beloved dog who staggered back to his Melbourne home with horrific injuries after apparently being abducted for a dog-fighting ring are trying to raise money for his costly medical bills.

Alfie, a kelpie-labrador cross, went missing on Thursday.

About 24 hours later he turned up on the doorstep of his Sunshine home with serious dog bites, a rope around his back leg, chain marks around his neck and an eight centimetre stab wound to his neck.

Police say an unknown woman was seen leaving the home on Thursday afternoon and getting into a car.

Alfie's owner, Sheena, believes it was a brazen dog snatch.

It has taken around 100 stitches and two plasma transfusions to keep Alfie alive. He suffered multiple wounds to his throat, neck, ribs and shoulders, but thankfully avoided injury to any of his organs.

“I find it really unbelievable that he came home. He really should be dead,” Sheena told Seven News.

Remarkably, the beloved family pet has pulled through, but his veterinary care is likely to cost more than $5,000.

She said the vet believed Alfie had been attacked by a much larger dog and police were investigating a possible link to a dog-fighting ring.
