Whale puts on spectacular display during family's fishing trip

An inquisitive whale has played a starring role in a Mornington Peninsula family's home video.

Skipper Kelvin Anthony was filming their boat trip on the bay when they had a thrilling encounter with the wayward humpback.

"It was very surreal and an experience I was very lucky to have with my family," he told Seven News.

On board with wife Gemma and their two baby girls, the family had chugged 50 metres off shore when the unexpected visitor came calling.

Heading to Queensland from Antarctica, the curious humpback frolicked for more than an hour alongside the family's boat.

At times venturing so close, the thrill turned to panic.

"It went under the boat, with its head out one end and its tail out the other," Kelvin said.

"It wouldn't take much movement to throw the boat over."

While it is not unheard of to spot whales in the bay, it is a rare spectacle with just two to three sightings a year on average.

The whale soon disappeared as mysteriously as it arrived, but not without bidding the family a fond farewell.
