A recovering ice addict who fatally ploughed into a woman's car at 150 kilometres per hour will spend at least five years behind bars.

Toby Williams was sentenced to seven years behind bars, with a minimum of five, for the crash that killed Natalie Sheckel last September.

The court heard Williams had been withdrawing from the drug ice after a five-year addiction when he crashed into 33-year-old Ms Sheckel's car in Leopold, travelling at a speed of 150 kilometres per hour.

He was not ice-affected when the crash happened but he had been driving to buy drugs, the court was told.

The court heard that immediately after the crash, Williams became aggressive and agitated. He blamed Ms Sheckel for the accident and said he hoped she was dead.

Williams pleaded guilty to one count of culpable driving and another of driving while suspended.

Just moments after her son was jailed, Heather Williams made a tearful apology to the victim's family.

"Ice, what has ice done to my family? It's taken everything I've owned. It's taken dignity. It's shattered us," she told reporters outside court.

"My family would never ever forget Natalie, will never forget Natalie, even though we didn't know her, but we do grieve so badly for them."
