'Very alarming': Renter's cry for help as mushroom grows from wall

A woman has taken to social media to ask for advice after finding a mushroom growing inside her rental home.

“I found a mushroom growing out of our walls in our laundry, I have an almost 2-year-old so this was obviously very alarming,” the woman wrote, along with an image of a mushroom growing out of a wall.

“Who knows what’s going on behind those walls?” she added.

The woman said she had reported the growth to her real estate agent but they hadn’t responded.

“I have contacted the real estate probably five or six times about this and am told every time I call that the property manager isn’t available,” she wrote.

People in the closed Facebook group were quick to respond with suggestions to act quickly.

“This is a massive health issue that needs attention,” one person commented.

“You shouldn’t have to live like that, it’s not okay,” another person added.

“Pay a company to come and do a mould inspection, they will tell you if it’s hazardous,” a user suggested.

While some thought the sprouting mushroom may be a sign of bigger problems.

“Imagine what you’re breathing in! It’s a health hazard,” a person wrote.

“The house could have a rising damp issue,” one person suggested.

A few people suggested the woman make an official complaint to the rental tenancy tribunal but one person commented that she should start packing.

“I’d be breaking the lease and moving! There should be no extra charges since they are not following up on the issues and it’s becoming hazardous”.
