Vegans confront Aussie neighbour over cooking meat: 'Makes us feel sick'

Strangely enough, it's not the first time a complaint like this has been made – with one even making it to the supreme court.

A bizarre dispute has erupted in Perth’s north over the smell of one neighbour’s food.

Burns Beach resident Kylie claims she received a letter from her vegan neighbour asking her to close her windows when she cooks to stop the “sickening” aroma from travelling next door.

The handwritten note – with the words ‘please take serious’ written on the envelope – was submitted to the Hey Perth Facebook page and reads:

“Hello neighbour, could you please shut your side window when cooking please. My family are vegan (we eat only plant based foods) and the smell of the meat you cook makes us feel sick and upset. We would appreciate your understanding.”

The letter was signed from "Sarah, Wayne and the kids".

The post quickly attracted almost 350 comments from amused locals.

“Should definitely shut the window and then cook on the bbq right next to the fence,” one wrote.

“Time for a huge bbq....whole street is invited,” another said.

“Jesus… what is the world coming to when you cant cook a steak in your own kitchen,” someone else wrote, while several described the vegan neighbour as “entitled”.

Vegan takes meat-eating neighbours to court

While the letter may seem farfetched, it’s surprisingly not the first time a request like this has been made.

In 2019, a vegan took her neighbours to the supreme court with complaints about the smell of meat and fish coming from their barbecue.

The court threw out the case, but other complaints from the same woman included chairs scraping on concrete and the sounds of children playing basketball, according to The Guardian.
