Bizarre twist in disturbing targeted attack
An investigation has been launched after 65 women reported receiving letters containing used condoms in the mail in a targeted attack.
Letters have been mailed to residential addresses across Melbourne’s east and southeast.
The incidents have occurred over the past three months, the first on March 20 and the most recent on May 15.
Police say that in most of these cases the victims have received multiple packages or letters containing handwritten messages and the suspected used condoms.
The female victims all graduated from Kilbreda College in 1999, and it is understood their addresses were obtained from an old yearbook, according to the Herald Sun.
More than 65 female victims have come forward to local police stations to report the incidents.
“It is believed that most of those who reported the material have received multiple letters, all with the suspected used item included,” a police spokesperson said.
“Officers believe the victims are linked and are part of a targeted attack.”
One victim told the Herald Sun that she had received a letter containing “very graphic (handwritten) messages”, then began contacting friends to see if they had also received the same package.
“I didn’t sleep the night I received the letter, it really creeped me out,” Bree Walker said.
“We have no idea who is behind sending these letters, but we think it has come from a yearbook that contained our addresses.
“It’s very unnerving and some women have received at least four letters.”
The Bayside Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team continue to investigate the incidents, while police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
