Under Paris has become one of Netflix's most-watched movies ever following its release earlier this month.

The new French thriller, which debuted with an impressive 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (since moving down to 66%), focuses on a scientist called Sophia (Bérénice Bejo) who teams up with a police commander to lure a shark in the Seine back to the ocean.

Netflix has now revealed that Under Paris is the site's fifth most-popular non-English language movie ever, taking in over 120 million hours viewed, with 69.6 million views in total.

It sits behind 2022 Norwegian monster movie Troll, and Spanish movies Society of the Snow, Nowhere and The Platform.

Under Paris comes from director Xavier Gens, and has received praise from critics for its "silly" elements and "thrilling" action.

Rue Morgue's Michael Gingold called it a "well-crafted and diverting enough for nature-amok fans fishing for simple aquatic thrills", while Variety's Michael Nordine argued that it "swims rather than sinks as it adds life to a genre that’s been bloodless for far too long".

"We don’t go into a shark thriller with high expectations, so Under Paris being merely good enough is plenty to warrant a recommendation," added Decider's John Serba.

In the wake of its success, speculation has been rife over a potential sequel, though Gens revealed this month that nothing is in the pipeline as of yet.

"Right now, as of today, we're not on it but there's a chance that we'll be discussing it soon," he told Variety. "If there is a sequel, it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water."

Under Paris is available to watch on Netflix.
