'Sorry, would you prefer pet or love?' Outrageous response to sexism complaint

Virgin Trains has apologised "unreservedly" for responding to a complaint about sexism by being "more sexist".

On Monday, passenger Emily Cole tweeted that a male train manager had been "hideously patronising" by calling her "honey," as she travelled from Edinburgh to King’s Cross in London.

Within 15 minutes a Virgin Trains spokesperson responded to Ms Cole's complaint, by apologising and asking what she would prefer to be called.

"Sorry for the mess up Emily, would you prefer 'pet' or 'love' next time?" they tweeted.

Ms Cole then retweeted the response, saying: "Wonderful to see that Virgin Trains take complaints of rude and misogynistic behaviour seriously. Stunned."

Virgin Trains has since deleted the tweet and apologised.

"We apologise unreservedly for this tweet and any offence that it may have caused. To avoid causing more offence we have deleted the original post," a statement read.

Ms Cole said there was a mistake on her train and they were told to move seats with their luggage.

"The first person to check my ticket was very abrasive. His response to my explaining the situation (politely and honestly), and that I wanted to complain was 'you go ahead honey'," she told Metro.

"In the context and given his aggressive tone I can only assume he didn’t like being (politely!) challenged by a woman – it felt like a punch in the face."
