Teen left with horrific blisters on back after snorkelling on holiday

WARNING – GRAPHIC IMAGES: A teenager has revealed photos of the horrific balloon-sized blisters that spread across her back after spending a day in the sun while on holiday – despite claiming she applied SPF 30 sunscreen.

Maisie Squires, 16 from the UK, spent the day snorkelling in Cuba on July 23.

She said she was wearing sunscreen but was still left red raw as excruciating burns and blisters formed across her back the next day.

The teenager from Leeds, Yorks, who has just left school, shared pictures of her severely burned back on social media, warning others to the dangers of sunburn.

"I was snorkelling for about an hour and I was wearing sun cream,” she wrote.

"Because I was in the water, I didn't know my back was burning until the early hours of the next day.

"But it was really sore that night and I was hardly able to sleep.

"I had definitely put SPF 30 sun cream on, it just obviously wasn't enough.”

She described the blisters as horrific and said she was still suffering days later.

The day after her snorkelling trip, Maisie had to endure the nine hour flight back to the UK with the huge blisters protruding through her T-shirt.

"When I landed in Manchester, I went straight to A&E [hospital Accident and Emergency department] for the doctors to have a look at it.

"They had a feel of the blisters and just said that they would pop themselves.

"The doctors put some incubus cream on the burns which is what you can see in the picture as it turns black."

‘Everyone really needs to wear sun cream’

Maisie has shared her photographs online to warn others to the dangers of being in the sun.

"Everyone really needs to wear sun cream – even if you think you don't need it,” she said.

"Sometimes you don't even know your skin is burning and that's the biggest problem.

"People often think they will be OK even for a short period of time, but your skin can burn in just 10/15 minutes like mine did in Cuba."
