Two men have been killed after a stolen car crashed into an electricity pole in Melbourne’s north on Tuesday morning.

The car was driving along Camp Rd in Broadmeadows about 5.30am when it lost control.

One man died at the scene while a second man was transported to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

The man later died in hospital.

“It is believed a vehicle with two male occupants lost control and crashed into a pole just after 5.30am,” Victoria Police said.

Both men are yet to be formally identified.

Two firearms were located inside the vehicle, with one believed to be a sawn-off shotgun.

Major Crash Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Daryll Out said the car was spotted travelling in excess of 180km/h and would have been travelling at speeds above 100 km/h at the time of the accident.

“Early this morning there was a white Hyundai that was driving around and seen multiple times at high speed by a number of different people, including police,” he said.

“(It is) extremely worrying to police that we’ve got that kind of behaviour by people that are driving throughout the evening in these built-up areas at those speeds and it had the potential to be absolutely disastrous for anybody else who would have been in the vicinity of it.”

The car was spotted by a motorist travelling above 180 km/h on the Tullarmarine Freeway on Monday evening.

There was no police pursuit of the vehicle after it was spotted by police in Fawkner and Broadmeadows overnight.

Sergeant Out said the car was stolen from Moama in NSW in December.

Camp Rd remains closed between Blair St and Maygar Blvd, with Victoria Police directing traffic at the scene.

Motorists have been encouraged to use Barry Rd or the M80 Ring Rd as alternative routes.
