Two killed after jet snaps in half on failed landing

Two people have died after a plane overshot the runway and crashed into an embankment, causing the aircraft to snap in half.

Two more passengers remain in hospital after the passenger jet crash landed off the runway at Greenville Downtown Airport in South Carolina on Thursday about 1.40pm local time.

Greenville County coroner Bobby Evans told reporters four people were on board the plane with one person dying at the scene while another died on arrival at hospital.

Two other people were hospitalised but the deceased are yet to be identified, he added.

“It looked like the two that died, died from blunt force injuries,” Mr Evans said.

It’s believed the four people on board were two pilots and two passengers.

A spokesman for the fire department added it also caught fire after crashing.

It’s not known why the plane didn’t come to a stop but authorities said it wasn’t undertaking an emergency landing.

They also aren’t entirely sure where the aircraft was from but according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s website the plane is registered in Delaware.

The investigation continues.
