Family pay tribute to truck crash victims

The two people who lost their lives in a horror head-on collision between a truck and a car north of Adelaide have been identified as husband-and-wife Ian and Rose Hampel.

Family members have taken to social media to pay tribute to the beloved couple, with cousin Lorraine Potts writing: “I wish to advise that my cousin Ian Hampel and his wife Rose sadly lost their lives in a vehicle accident on Friday, 17th of May, 2024.

“Ian was the eldest son of Ken and Eunice Hampel formerly of Wilmington, SA. Heartfelt condolences to Elaine, David and families. Together forever.”

Emergency services raced to the crash scene at Magdala, about 70km north of the South Australian capital, about 2pm on Friday afternoon.

A Toyota ute and a Selleck Transport truck had collided on Owen Road before hitting a stobie pole and bringing down power lines, according to first responders.

“Sadly, two occupants of the ute, a 67-year-old man and 63-year-old woman from the local region died at the scene,” an SA Police spokesman said on Saturday.

“The truck driver, a 65-year-old man from Smithfield was not injured in the crash.”

Owen Rd was closed until 12.30am Saturday.

Major crash investigators are investigating the cause of the crash.

The deaths of the Hampels mark the 35th and 36th lives lost on South Australia’s roads this year.
