Two dead in horror caravan fire
Two people have died and a third has been taken to hospital with burn injuries after a horror fire.
A caravan in Upper Brookfield, in Brisbane’s western suburbs, caught fire in the early hours of Saturday, with multiple fire crews racing to the property on Galvin Road about 4.30am, to find flames coming out of “all sides of the structure”.
Two people were found dead inside the caravan, which had been completely destroyed with parts of the roof collapsed, police said.
Paramedics treated a man with burns to his hands, neck and shoulders, and he was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
Queensland police inspector Karl Hahne said the man’s injuries were consistent with someone who had either tried to escape the blaze or break in to help.
There were multiple people staying at the property overnight, including children.
“Obviously some of them witnessed the fire so it’s been quite traumatic but we are systematically going through, speaking to those people, getting their versions to understand what occurred in the early hours of this morning,” Mr Hahne told 9 News.
QFES acting superintendent Tim Burchmann told The Courier Mail it was not known if there were fire alarms in the structure, though they are not legally required in caravans.
“It’s very tragic, the circumstances surrounding this incident are going to hit the community very hard,” he said.
Police have declared a crime scene as they work to determine the cause of the fire.
