Twitter melts down over 'incredible' transformation of Trump ally
He was a regular fixture on television screens around the world at the beginning of the year as Donald Trump's turbulent tenure as the 45th president of the US drew to a close.
But just nine months on, one of Mr Trump's closest aides is almost unrecognisable as rumours circulate he himself is planning to run for presidency.
Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has triggered a huge social media response following his appearance on Fox News's Hannity earlier this week.
The 57-year-old's considerable weight loss left many needing a double take to believe it was actually him.
Journalist Aaron Rupar shared a screenshot from his appearance stating: "Mike Pompeo has lost an incredible amount of weight."
Anti-Trump group Duty To Warn shared the same image to its 170,000 followers stating it really was Mr Pompeo, joking his transformation was made possible after removing "a 300 pound, orange, malignantly narcissistic tumour".
Many users on Twitter were amazed by the weight loss over such a short period of time.
Several comments attributed his weight loss to a forced change in diet.
"Well, he's no longer hosting those lavish Madison dinners at taxpayer expense," one person wrote.
Speculation over Pompeo presidential bid
Others suggested the loss was down to weight loss surgery.
While his slender frame caught the attention of thousands online this week, Mr Pompeo has featured regularly in the media since leaving office, with speculation such a move is down to Mr Pompeo harbouring hopes of running for presidency in 2024.
The idea has been fuelled by several hints made publicly, including when he told Hannity earlier this year he was "always up for a good fight" and agreeing his chances of running were "a strong maybe", the Daily Mail reported.
Mr Pompeo remains a vocal presence on Twitter, routinely criticising the Biden administration.
