Truck driver impaled by six-metre stake survives

Incredible images have emerged of a Chinese truck driver who was impaled by a six-metre wooden stake during a highway collision.

40-year-old Li Feng was pinned to his cabin by the sharpened pole after his truck crashed into the back of a vehicle carrying timber.

But in an amazing turn of events, doctors say Mr Li will survive after the stake missed his heart by just inches.

The pole damaged the truckie’s stomach, spleen and left lung, but Li is expected to make a full recovery after four hours of surgery to remove it.

Police spokesman Li Wu said: "As a result of the accident, several of the wooden poles that were sticking out over the allowed limit from the lorry in front, speared into the lorry behind and smashed into the cab.

"One of them went into the body of the driver who was pinned to his seat."

Doctor Chung Peng said: "The only risk now is that we may not have removed all of the dirt and fragments of wood or material that may have been forced into his body. If no infection sets in during the next few days, we expect him to make a full recovery."

Li is now in a stable condition but is expected to spend several more weeks in hospital.
