Detectives are investigating after four iconic foreshore palm trees went up in flames in Melbourne on Sunday night.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said officers responded to to reports on Sunday night about 7.15pm that four trees on Marine Parade, which runs alongside the St Kilda foreshore, were on fire.

“Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after trees were set alight in St Kilda on Sunday, 28 April,” the spokesperson said.

“No one was injured, but one tree was destroyed and three others sustained minor damages.”

Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed that firefighters were also called to the scene.

“At 7.11pm yesterday, firefighters were called to the marina at St Kilda following reports to triple-0 that three palm trees were on fire,” a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.

“Crews arrived within seven minutes and immediately began extinguishing the flames and remained on the scene for another half an hour to put out smouldering embers.

“No nearby boats or structures were impacted by the blaze.”

The spokesperson said the scene was deemed under control at 7.22pm.
