Traffic chaos as truck bursts into flames

Firefighters are trying to contain a large fuel spill after a truck burst into flames in western Sydney, creating major delays on nearby roads.

The truck burst into flames on Betts Road, next to the Cumberland Highway in Greystanes about 10.20am on Wednesday.

Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed the fire was extinguished by 11.36am but firefighters are still working to contain a “large spill from the trucks ruptured fuel tank”.

The highway is closed in a southbound direction, with drivers urged to allow extra travel time and exercise caution in the area.

Alternatively, light vehicles travelling south can use Old Prospect Road, Centenary Road, Merrylands Road to re-join the Cumberland Highway.

Heavy vehicles travelling southbound can consider using the Great Western Highway, Woodville Road and Hume Highway.

Police are directing traffic on site.
