A major road closure has caused traffic chaos on Saturday afternoon as motorists attempt to navigate long heavy delays.

The westbound lane of Sydney’s Lane Cove Tunnel has been closed after an “overheight truck” attempted to enter the tunnel.

Transport NSW is advising motorists to avoid the area amid “very heavy” traffic.

“Motorists should allow plenty of extra travel time and expect delays,” Transport NSW said.

“Emergency services and traffic crews are responding, however there is no forecast for when the tunnel will reopen westbound.”

Vehicles are being currently being diverted onto Epping Rd in an attempt to alleviate the traffic pressure.

The Lane Cove twin-tunnel tollway is part of the Sydney Orbital Network, stretching for 3.6 km.

More to come.
