Woman slammed over X-rated act on holiday: 'So shocking'

Three tourists are reportedly facing charges of "obscene acts" by Italian authorities on the picturesque Amalfi Coast after a woman's seemingly impromptu X-rated display at a popular landmark.

A video taken by perplexed onlookers shows a naked woman posing on the steps of the Amalfi Cathedral for a raunchy public photoshoot.

While a photographer snaps her picture, the only thing covering the woman is a long red sheet which she can be seen pressing up against her chest.

A passerby can be heard in the video admonishing the unusual scene, labelling the apparent tourists "crazy".

"Naked at the church," she says in a confounded tone.

The cathedral dates back to the ninth century. It is dedicated to the apostle Saint Andrew and many Italians would likely be offended by the salacious display, according to art historian and writer Laura Thayer, who who lives in Amalfi and writes the Ciao Amalfi blog.

"That it happened at the church is what made the episode so shocking," she told CNN.

"The Duomo [cathedral] is a place of worship and a place very close to the hearts of the Amalfitani. That specific backdrop touches the historic memory of the locals. The bronze doors hearken back to the days of the Republic of Amalfi. These doors open for processions, for weddings, for funerals — moments that make life."

CNN cited a local police spokesperson saying the woman, the photographer and another member of the group were holidaying from the UK. They reportedly told authorities the stunt wasn't for publicity purposes but the trio were merely trying to create lasting memories of their trip.

Local media reported authorities had caught up with the group and the incident was referred to the public prosecutors office for "obscene acts in a public place".

It's not the first time tourists have made the news for their scantily clad antics at the popular destination. Last month two women were pictured taking a late-night dip in the Sant'Andrea fountain.

The rise of social media has seen a proliferation of such stories recently. Earlier this year, a model influencer faced possible jail time and a hefty fine after posing in a raunchy photoshoot under a sacred tree in Bali for her followers.
