The touching story behind this viral photo of Queensland firefighter cradling a puppy

A picture of a firefighter helping a puppy has warmed the hearts of many in the wake of Queensland’s bushfire crisis.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services shared a picture of a firefighter offering water to a dog on its Facebook page.

“We’re here to help all Queenslanders,” QFES wrote in the caption.

The photo has received more than 2,400 likes and almost 500 shares.

Many have praised the firefighter, identified by The Courier-Mail as fire lieutenant Blake Hyland, for stopping to help the canine.

“A job well done,” one woman wrote.

“Keep up the good works guys. You are heroes.”

Another woman described Mr Hyland as “a sweet soul”.

The little dog was found after Jason Holm, 48, a resident of Baffle Creek in the Gladstone Region, evacuated his home, The Courier-Mail reported.

Mr Holm took four dogs and two of three puppies but couldn’t find the third one.

The puppy, who hasn’t been named yet, has since been reunited with its owners.

Mr Holm and his wife are among thousands who have been forced from their homes this week as firefighters battle up to 140 wildfires.
