'Totally unacceptable': Father's outrage after son's nappy 'explodes' all over him

A concerned Sydney father has expressed his fury after discovering his one-year-old son’s nappy had “exploded” – leaving him covered in dangerous gelatine crystals.

The graphic designer took to social media to voice his concern after finding the $30-a-pack nappies had overflowed and leaked up to his son’s chest following just seven hours of wear.

Mr Eitan said he was a loyal Huggies customer of four years, but this was the first time he had bought their new Mickey Mouse Ultra Dry range.

“It was very upsetting to find my kid like this,” he said.

“It just exploded with crystals all over him, he was wet up to his chest inside his onesie and very stressed.

“It’s totally unacceptable that he had to experience this – not to mention dangerous. Who knows what they put in those crystals?”

Mr Eitan said he had been purchasing Huggies Winnie The Pooh range for several years and only tried the new Mickey Mouse product – which the company claims lasts 12 hours – when the old line was discontinued.

However, the nasty surprise was only the beginning, according to the angry father, who says when he contacted Huggies to raise his concerns about the quality of their new product, they denied it was different to the previous line.

He is now hoping to raise awareness among other parents who could be putting their children at risk and drive the company to investigate the issue.

“When you pay good money you expect a quality product, they’re meant to last 12 hours,” he exclaimed.

“Huggies told me the crystals are kid-friendly and not a safety hazard but said if he swallows them to take him to hospital, which is a bit of a contradiction and a bit concerning.

“Now other parents are coming forward on social media to say they are having the same problem. They are clearly not the same quality.

“It’s upsetting they are not owning up to it, they should take it off the shelf and investigate and make other parents should be made aware of the risk.”

In a statement, a spokesperson for Huggies’ parent company Kimberly-Clark denied changes were made to the absorbency of the new product.

“We recently launched an updated version of our Huggies Ultra Dry range – featuring a new Mickey and Minnie outer-cover, which replaced the previous Winnie the Pooh graphics,” the spokesperson said.

“This was purely a change to the outer-cover and importantly, no changes were made to the existing absorbency specifications.

“We have received some calls and social media posts from parents asking questions about the recent changes.

“As part of this process, consumers are sending back samples so that our quality control team can review these, in addition to all new products manufactured at our local facility.

“To date, we have not identified any manufacturing or quality concerns associated with the updated range.”

The spokesperson urged customers to contact their support team with any concerns surrounding the new product.
