Three people dead after falling from apartment building during wild storm
The tragic deaths have rocked a nation, with many fearing for their safety in high-rise apartments.
Three people, including a child, have reportedly fallen to their deaths from a high-rise apartment building after gale-force winds caused the windows to cave in.
The 11-year-old boy was reportedly sleeping with his grandmother when it's feared they were both blown out of an opening in their bedroom created by the storm in China's Nanchang, according to state media.
The tragic incident early Sunday morning has rocked the nation, with heavy scrutiny online about the quality of Chinese high-rise apartments, with a large percentage of the country living in such buildings.
A video of a woman pulling her young son to safety as her apartment window gives way during the terrifying conditions has gone viral on Chinese social media, as has footage of authorities in the apartment where the boy and grandmother reportedly fell from. In the video, the window has completely gone as has the mattress they were on.
Husband failed to realise wife fell from apartment
The third victim to fall to their death was a married woman, with her husband surviving after sleeping in a separate room, local reports state. The husband told reporters he did not initially see the window in her room had gone, believing she may have gone downstairs. He later heard crying from below, becoming confused. A hashtag related to her death on Twitter-like site Weibo has been viewed more than 380 million times.
"So, so scary," one Weibo user wrote in response. "I feel like I can no longer stand near my window," another said.
On Monday authorities issued a warning to residents more dangerous conditions were expected, urging people to take precautions, China Daily reported. Winds were detected at 127km/h on Sunday, according to CGTN.
The official cause of the deaths have yet to be determined, authorities said. A fourth person has reportedly died as a result of the storm, however not from falling from a building.
