A WA Police spokesperson could not confirm such reports with Yahoo News Australia. Police are expected to release further information later on Tuesday.

One witness told The West he heard what sounded like several gunshots in the area popular with families and beachgoers.

"I saw the heat and embers from the fire on the other side of the bush. There would have been about 10 bangs," he said.
