More than 100 students from a range of West Kimberley schools took to the Broome courts for a high-quality basketball carnival at the end of last month.

The 2015 Smarter than Smoking West Kimberley High School Basketball Carnival was held at Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre on Wednesday, May 27.

Students from Broome, Derby, Beagle Bay, La Grange and Fitzroy Crossing showcased their abilities, with six boys' teams and eight girls' teams taking part.

In the boys' division, there was some tough competition and great skills shown throughout the day from all the teams.

The grand final saw Derby District High School take on St Mary's College in a tight match.

The visitors from Derby proved their class and took out the final, winning 16-8.

In the girls' division, Broome Senior High School played against the ever-improving Sacred Heart School outfit.

The Sacred Heart girls put up a good fight and showed skill throughout but could not overcome the Broome-based team.

Garnduwa community co-ordinator Annie Dann said the competition went off without a hitch.

"The carnival went really well and Garnduwa were really impressed with the level of skill shown as well as the good sportsmanship shown by all the schools … there were some real leadership skills shown by some of the older students, which helped their teams to perform so well," she said.

Dann also thanked sponsors Healthway, Broome Basketball Association's Rob Close and the Wirrpanda Foundation's Rochelle Dolby.
