Film industry a hit with Hills students

When film trucks rolled into the Perth Hills last year, students at Roleystone Community College had little idea they were about to step into the spotlight.

The school's strong links with the film industry were on display during the filming of Paper Planes when 15 students were chosen as extras.

The experience of working on a movie on their school's doorstep was the spark for many who now count film and digital media studies as their favourite subject.

Roleystone Community College runs an accredited program in the field and is one of many public schools that could earn $10,000 and other prizes as part of the Department of Education's Our School's a Star program.

But amid the bright lights of a movie set, teachers are quick to remind budding directors of the less glamorous side of the industry.

Associate Principal Phil Springett said the school prepared its students for the reality of the industry that often involved long hours.
