Wally's race for charity

Corporate WA is being enticed out of the canteen to get into a canter that will help the State's elite athletes live out their sporting dreams.

The Wally Foreman Foundation Corporate Canter, named after the late WA sports administrator, will be part of the Perth Track Classic next February.

It will pit teams from the corporate sector against each other in a 4x400m race at the State Athletics Centre in a fun competition.

Foreman's wife Lyn said it was the perfect legacy for a man who once went for a lunch-time run, only to be asked by a friend when he had taken up power-walking.

She said the Canter reflected her husband's enjoyment and passion for sport, as well as his dubious athletic ability.

"It would have been right down his alley … he would have worked out a funny name for it," Mrs Foreman said yesterday.

"He was always about respectfully pulling fun, but through the foundation there have been many recipients who have had help and gone on to win medals.

"If someone needed some help, Wally would always find a way."

The Wally Foreman Foundation's first scholarship came in 2007 and recipients have included Olympians Emma Knox (2008 water polo, bronze), Sonja Johnson (2008 equestrian, silver), Jesse Phillips (2012 kayaking) and world champion cyclists Luke Durbridge and Josie Tomic. The recipients for this year were para-triathlete Brant Garvey and cyclist Elissa Wundersitz.

Entry for the Canter is $2000 a team of four. The winning team receives a perpetual trophy and a special memento.
