War on fare evaders

The Public Transport Authority will today begin a campaign to crackdown on fare evaders.

And the campaign message - directed at younger commuters - is that fine dodgers could ultimately lose their driver's licence.

PTA spokesman David Hynes said it appeared that young people were not aware of the penalties associated with not paying.

"If they are fined for not having a valid ticket and then they don't pay it, they can be banned from driving," Mr Hynes said.

As part of the campaign, fact sheets and posters will be sent to high schools across the metropolitan area.
