Police deny there will be reduction in local policing services or slower response times under a radical shake-up of resources including merging districts from seven to four.

The bigger districts will each be staffed with more frontline officers and be set up under a new model that was successful during a six-month trial in Perth's worst crime district, police say.

The Peel and south metropolitan (Fremantle) districts will be the first to combine, with the new model introduced in September.

Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan said the two areas had a total of about 488 police officers, which would be bolstered to at least 550 officers under the new model.
