England physio s cup over after bizarre injury
England physio's cup over after bizarre injury

England physio Gary Lewin's World Cup has ended early after he dislocated his ankle celebrating his country's goal against Italy.

Lewin jumped up after Daniel Sturridge scored England's equaliser in their opening Group D game but landed on a water bottle and turned his ankle.

The match was held up for a few minutes as Lewin received treatment, before he was taken away on a stretcher.

England manager Roy Hodgson confirmed afterwards that Lewin would be heading home.

That was a very sad moment for us," England boss Roy Hodgson said. "In celebrating the goal he jumped up, landed on a water bottle and dislocated his ankle.

"It was very painful. He was taken to hospital. The doctor set it, put it back in at the side of the field, but it's the end of the World Cup for Gary."

And to make matters worse for England, they went down 2-1 with Mario Balotelli heading in Italy's winner.
