Hurdlers strike out with heavy falls in semi-final events

Canadian hurdler Nikitta Holder has suffered a hard fall in the semi finals of the women's 100m hurdles, ending her shot at a medal in Rio.

The 29-year-old clipped the top of a hurdle mid-way through the race, sending her sprawling onto the track as her competitors sailed past her.

Holder was praised for getting back on her feet to finish the event, but she wasn't the only one to bite the dust in the stadium.

In an earlier heat, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico appeared to have injured her leg after striking the second-last hurdle in the race.

The third-place contender was left limping over the finish line after being disqualified from the event.

On Wednesday, Haitian hurdler Jeffrey Julmis failed to clear the first jump, instead taking a tumble on the track in the men's 110m semi-final.

Confident in the lead up to the race, Julmis misjudged his take off and fell embarrassingly short of his target.

While most people wouldn't bother to finish the race after such a shaky start, Julmis got back on his feet and finished the race in 8th place.

"It didn't make sense to go down as sore loser," he told reporters after the event, his attitude gaining him legions of new fans worldwide.
