Coaches unaware of Kerr approach

The rumoured return of Daniel Kerr to the ranks of the Goldfields Football League has been met with non-committal responses from the clubs touted as his most likely destination.

News broke yesterday that the troubled former West Coast star would be taking a high-paying job with a Kalgoorlie-based Aboriginal corporation, and would be looking to continue playing country football in the GFL.

The midfielder has walked away from his Great Southern Football League contract with the Denmark-Walpole Magpies just five games into their current season, with coach Matt Candy suggesting a GFL club had offered him a "bucketload of money" to make the journey north.

But the league's coaches said they were largely unaware any approach had been made to Kerr when the Kalgoorlie Miner contacted them yesterday.

Kambalda coach Justin Tarasinski said the club - where Kerr put in a guest appearance alongside former West Coast teammates Andrew Embley and Callum Chambers last season - had not approached the former Eagle.

"The last time we spoke to him would be seven or eight months ago by email," Tarasinski said.

Boulder coach Bradley George said he was similarly unaware of any contact, while Railways coach Craig Alderdice said he was not aware any discussions had taken place.

"We certainly haven't heard anything," Alderdice told the Miner yesterday.

"He would be a very tricky player to match up on, but it would all depend on where his fitness level was at."

Kalgoorlie coach Brendon Simpson said he had been made aware of Kerr's departure, but he was unlikely to be heading to the Kangaroos.

"Given we are currently going through a bit of a rebuild and we are looking for some stability, I'm not sure that's the course of action I would be looking to take," he said.

Mines Rovers player-coach Dion Fleay likewise said no approach had been made.

Kerr has been plagued by legal trouble this year, pleading not guilty to two counts of endangering the life, health or safety of a person after an alleged incident at a home in the Perth suburb of Glendalough last November.

He has kicked two goals in his four GSFL matches, and gathered 23 touches in round one.

But struggles for fitness and form have seen him moved to a deep forward role.

He is due to face court again on June 9.
