Tasmania scored an early breakthrough but Western Australia forged ahead in Sunday's opening session of their Sheffield Shield at Bellerive Oval.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Tigers had the visitors at 1-71 at lunch.

Opener Marcus Harris (6) fell victim to an Andrew Fekete (1-27) delivery in the fourth over.

Cameron Bancroft (40no) is forming a good partnership with Michael Klinger (22no), with the pair adding an unbeaten 61.

The Warriors came to Hobart with back-to-back wins in the Shield season so far, including a first-round, seven-wicket victory over Tasmania.

The home side are yet to reveal why spinner Xavier Doherty was a late scratching from their line-up.

There is speculation he has been called up for national duty, but Cricket Australia is yet to confirm the move.

James Faulkner (0-13 from five overs) returned for Tasmania who came into the attack in the 23rd over.
