Dance academy makes its debut

Students Kaiya Barrett-Lennard, 12 and Luka Wray, 12 with dance instructor Penny La Porta.

Dance will take centre stage next month with a new academy specialising in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap and hip-hop opening its doors.

Broome Academy of Dance will start classes at Broome Lotteries House at the beginning of the school term under the guidance of head instructor Penny La Porta.

La Porta specialises in ballet and jazz for all ages, Kristin Chamberlain in tap and contemporary and Helena Dowie in hip hop.

La Porta launched the academy with a performance by a group of dedicated young dancers at the Shinju Matsuri festival this month, catching the eye of several interested participants.

"Dance is my passion but it's the enjoyment of teaching that has driven me to open this academy for all to enjoy," she said.

"I believe dancing is a way for children to express their emotions, build confidence, improve co- ordination and get active.

"With the guidance of our experienced instructors at BAD, classes will be structured to ensure students of all abilities are guided to achieve their best and have lots of fun along the way."

La Porta has taught dance for the past 14 years in the classroom and has completed choreography for many performances. Her passion for dance coupled with her love for children has inspired her to take the next step and open a school so she can share her knowledge and experience with the people of Broome. Broome Academy of Dance is taking enrolments for the classes at Broome Lotteries House this Sunday between noon and 3pm.
